Pets at the lake

Barbie says;  I remember the pets at the lake.  Over the years, we had Pudgy (a fat cocker spaniel) and   Linda had three or four dogs: Fritzy, a dachshund, Scuffy & Colonel, both bull dogs.  Linda also had Huey, Duey and Louie (ducks of course).  She also had Alvin (a chipmunk) and Jose (a parrot). When I was 16, I had a couple hamsters named Ed & Barrie.  (ha ha, another story) Linda, you also had another dachshund, didn't you? When I was 17, Dave (my future husband) gave me Chief (a big black dog).  Did I leave any pets out? Oh yah,  Linda remember the pet mice that you had?

  1. Linda says:
My family was a 2 breeds of dogs family; dachshunds (weiner dogs) and english bull dogs. Our male dachshund Fritzi was black & tan and was bred with my god parents' Heidi who was black & tan. They had a litter of all black & tan pups and my Aunt Mary & Uncle Jack took 2 males and called them Gussie & Louie and my grandparents took a female and named her Maggie. Fritzi was exactly my age and he lived to be 12.
Whenever any of the weiner dogs got spayed by a skunk and came home smelling awful, I'd get the job of washing them on the dock with tomato and lemon juice. Some people think that doesn't help with the smell but it did somewhat. Scuffy was our first bull dog & then Colonel Porkchop. We had a vote one summer as to who snored the loudest; my grandpa or the bull dog. It was a toss up. Yes, we had Alvin the chipmonk who was caught at the lake and traveled back & forth with us for several years.
Huey, Dewey & Louie our pet white ducks were never caged. We let them roam freely and they would come to us when called to be fed. My Dad loved saying "oh look, Louie's pants 'are down'... get it? Anyway, one day my brother was crying holding a dead duck and said that the neighbor's (Ells) hunting dog ran after it on our property and killed it. My Dad, being agressively protective of what was his, stormed down the beach with the dead duck and hollered at them that their dog killed our duck. They said we should not have let the ducks roam free and the dog did what came naturally. My Dad said that their dog should not have been running free and if he saw their dog on our property ever again he'd shoot it. (which may or may not would have happened) They never spoke again.
My brother Casey had a pet white mouse that he named Elmer. Shortly after, Elmer got fat and had 9 babies. Her name got changed from Elmer.
Barbie forgot that we had a sparrow hawk that was about 7 inches tall. My brother hit it with his car coming home from Detroit Lakes Pavillion one night, stunning it so he put it in a box and brought it home. I would bring home white mice from science class and feed them to him live. My Mom would squeal and run off but I watched. Gruesome.
Barbie did leave out one of her pets; a green parakeet named Bo Bo. He was pretty.

  2. Bo Bo...That's right. I forgot about Bo Bo. Boy, you do have a good memory.

Linda, I'm glad you told the story about Ell's dog. Did the dog kill one or all three ducks?

I'm also glad that you mentioned your Grandparents. I remember them visiting every summer. I remember your Grandma teaching us a different solitaire game. You and I got so fast at flipping cards, she'd tell us to slow down. She couldn't tell if we were playing correctly or not. ha ha

  3. Barbie, thankfully Ellls' dog killed only 1 of our white ducks.
I loved it that my Grandparents came up every summer for 2 weeks. One summer, my parents flew home for a week and left me at the lake with Grandma & Grandpa. One night, I had the Seifert girls, Diane & Jane, spending the night. My Grandma came to the bedroom doorway and proclaimed that she had just got off the phone with my Mom. I had told G-ma to let me know when Mom called because I wanted to talk to her really bad. I missed her! I got upset and was letting her know it. There was a 7-Up bottle sitting on the dresser and she picked it up and swung it at me!! I fell back onto the bed and put my feet up to protect myself. The bottle hit one of my feet and bruised it. Diane and Jane looked on in horror. I told my Mom about it when they got back to the lake. She said she would never leave me with them again. And she kept her word.
